Welwick - East Yorkshire

Home to two of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators

In 1605.  John(Jack) and Christopher (Kit) Wright were born and raised at Plowlands Farm, just outside Welwick, you can see an 8ft statue of the 4 conspirators nearby, to commemorate this.

  • The Coach & Horses Pub

    The cottage has the benefit of being behind this wonderful country pub and has a warm and friendly atmosphere, like most of the villagers. It has a good selection of real ales, wines, and spirits and has lovely home-cooked food. Please note it is not open every day, and currently shuts on Monday and Tuesday.

  • RAF Holmpton Bunker

    From the front, this looks like a bungalow, but inside it hides a 120-metre long tunnel and once through the blast doors you can explore the secret world of the cold war defence.   • Withernsea Lighthouse

    This lighthouse was built a quarter of a mile inland and took 18 months to complete in 1894. It was last used on the 1st July 1976. The lighthouse stands 127ft high (39m) and has 144 steps for you to climb to the top, and enjoy the views of the East Yorkshire coastline, and even the Humber Bridge on a clear day. Today it is open to visitors and you can enjoy the large garden with a café selling light refreshments and souvenirs. You can find further details at www.withernsealighthouse.co.uk

  • Spurn Point National Nature Reserve

    The area is particularly popular with bird watchers, and you can enjoy wandering over the nature reserve (dogs not allowed) on the footpaths. There is no vehicle access to the end of the peninsula known as Spurn Point, you can walk or bike, but beware that during high tide the Point does get cut off, so you would need to check tide times prior to visiting.   • Hornsea

    This is another East Yorkshire Coastal Town, which is well worth a visit. It boasts fish and chips, a blue flag beach, and a mere which is the largest fresh water lake in Yorkshire. Again this is a popular destination for bird watching and is of international importance for migrating birds. Hornsea also has a shopping outlet known as Hornsea Freeport and has designer shops and places to stop and eat. To find out more visit www.visithornsea.co.uk

  • Skirlington Market

    This is situated past Hornsea and is well worth a visit on a Sunday when the market and car boot are on. Parking is free, and you can enjoy the various market stalls both indoor and outdoor selling food, clothes, pet accessories, towels, bedding, plants, and much more.
